Florida
Life in Miami is a celebration of sunlit mornings, waterfront breezes, and vibrant neighborhoods, from the leafy avenues of Coral Gables to the bayfront views of Coconut Grove and the glamour of Miami Beach. But every year, from June 1 to November 30, hurricane season reminds us that living in paradise also means being prepared.
The Edit has prepared this guide to combine straightforward readiness with smart, practical insight, so your home, your family, and your plans stay secure when storms approach.
Season Dates: June 1 – November 30
Peak Months: Mid-August through late October (with September 10 marking the historical peak)
2025 Forecast: NOAA predicts an above-average season, with 13–19 named storms, 6–10 hurricanes, and 3–5 major systems (Category 3+).
When we talk about hurricane season, timing matters. According to The Weather Channel, the most active stretch arrives in mid-August and builds to a dramatic peak in September, before easing only after mid-October.
Visualizing the Peak: Historically, storm frequency ramps up quickly by late summer, with September standing out as the most active month. Activity only begins to trend downward as the season moves into its final month of November.
How Many Storms?: On average (1991–2020), August through October produces 11 to 12 named storms. Considering the season averages 14 storms overall, this means roughly 92% of hurricane activity happens in just those three months.
Peak Landfalls, Too: According to NOAA, 93% of U.S. hurricane landfalls on the Gulf or East Coasts have taken place during this August–October window.
The Edit explains: With the peak of hurricane season approaching, now is the time to double-check your plan and supplies. Preparation today ensures you’re ready for the busiest months ahead.
